Homework 2 (Part 2) model solutions

G4. Was ist das Kooperationsprinzip?

Model answer: Make your conversational contribution such as is required, at the stage at qhich it occurs, by the accepted purpose or direction of the talk exchange in which you are engaged.

Was meint Grice damit?

Model answer: The maxim of Quality is more important than the maxim of Manner.

G7. Wie definiert Grice eine "konversationelle Implikatur" (S. 30-31)?

Model answer: If a speaker S says p, and thereby implies q, then S has conversationally implicated that q provided that (1) he is presumed to be observing the Cooperative Principle; (2) q is required in order for his utterance of p to be consistent with the presumption in (1); (3) the speaker expects the hearer to work out that q is required.

G8. Grice nennt zwei Beispiele konversationeller Implikaturen, die gegen keine Maxime verstoßen. Welche sind es?

Model answer: (1)
A: I am out of petrol.
B: There is a garage round the corner.

(2)
A: Smith doesn't seem to have a girlfriend these days.
B: He has been paying a lot of visits to New York lately.

Model answer: B would be infringing the maxim "Be relevant" unless he thinks, or thinks it is possible, that Smith has a girlfriend in New York.

Model answer: "Damning with faint praise", e.g.:

A: How was the food?
B: It was edible.

Model answer: On the surface, B is obviously not providing enough information, and so is apparently violating the maxim of Quantity (submaxim 1: Provide as much information as is required). But if we assume that the food was terrible, and that B was reluctant to say this directly out of a desire to be polite (on the surface) but hoped that A would draw this conclusion on his own, then we can maintain the assumption that B is actually following the Cooperative Principle. That the food was terrible, then, is what B is implicating.

Model answer: [Of someone stuffing himself with fries:]
A: Classy.

Model answer: Since A's utterance is obviously false, A is apparently violating the maxim of Quality (submaxim 1: Do not say what you know to be false). If A is following the Cooperative Principle, there must be some other proposition that A is trying to convey. In this case, it is most likely the opposite proposition: that this is not classy.

Welche?

Model answer: Relevanz/Relation (sei relevant)

Model answer: Relevanz/Relation (sei relevant)
